Spring 2008 - Web Exclusive
Senior Cricket
Winter training
at Trent Bridge has gone well and the lads are prepared for what the new season has to throw at us - although lets hope we escape
the wet weather of last year!
We welcome
Craig Woods, our overseas player from Durban, South Africa, who will be a great addition to the club both in a playing and
coaching capacity. Craig is a top order batsman/off spin bowler. He will also spend part of his time helping to maintain the
ground at The Strand. A welcome also goes out to Chris Evans, another addition to the first team playing staff. Chris is a wicket
keeper/batsman who in his earlier cricketing career represented Glamorgan 2nd XI. With these additions, plus the continued
development of our ‘home grown players’ coupled with the expected significant contributions of our more ’seasoned performers’, we
await the new season with eager anticipation.
Andy Simkiss,
leading the 1st XI, expects the team to be in the top 3 at the end of the year - pushing for Premier League status. Carl Whelan,
2nd XI captain, will accept nothing less than promotion back into Division 1C for his side. Colin McConnell, as 3rd XI skipper,
probably has the most difficult captain’s job in leading our ’developing’ cricketers, whilst at the same time remaining
competitive in Division 1K. A ‘top half’ finish will be the target for the 3rds. Chris Allcoat captain’s the Sunday 1st XI and
will have the support of Craig Woods as his vice-captain. These two will the ensure that the Sunday 1st team retains a competitive
edge to the cricket on offer on Sundays. Stuart Carlisle, captaining the Sunday 2nd XI, will continue the good work he has done in
recent seasons in helping to ‘blood’ our young cricketers with the guidance of some of our more experienced
players.
The recent
‘Cricket Force’ weekend saw improvements carried out on the training net area at The Strand, with the bowlers run-ups extended,
together with other pre-season preparatory work. Thank you to all who helped. The playing members of the club are aware of the
amount of work that goes on at each of our grounds away from match days, most of it undertaken on a voluntary basis by non-playing
members, to ensure our facilities remain amongst the best in the county. Whilst not always being available to help on a regular
basis, we hope to see even more of our playing members getting involved in the necessary ‘off field’ duties as the season
unfolds.
There is a good
sense of anticipation as we enter the 2008 season, with the club having high expectations. Let’s hope we have a great summer on
and off the field!

Social and Fundraising
Attenborough CC’s monthly fundraising evenings continue to be a huge success with club members. Already this year we have a run a Chilli Night, Steak Night, and Sausage and Mash Night. On top of this we are planning a Wine Tasting Night for June, a Race Night in July, and a Summer Party in August. All members, new and old, are welcome to attend these evenings, details of which can be found in the club pavilion. Finally, the club would like to thank all the volunteers who put their time into the organistion and runing of our social events, without whom they would not be possible.

Where Would We Be Without The Ladies?
Cricket is a male dominated sport and at Attenborough, although all of the teams comprise of men, there are a
lot of ladies who do a huge amount of work for the club:
· For each home game there is a small team of ladies who put on a spectacular spread for tea, of the which the quality is
highly regarded throughout the county.
· The Youth Section is supplied with chip cobs, burgers, and other refreshments during their matches and training sessions,
led by Elaine Allcoat and Pauline Taylor.
· At bonfire night, a group of 25 ladies organised and served food and refreshments with great
success,
· We have been involved in numerous social evenings, and recently Rachel Harvey put on a fantastic spread at our Chilli
Night.
· At the recent Cricket Force weekend, Pol Johnson did a fabulous job of steam-cleaning the upholstery in the club
pavilion.
· It is not all hard work though. Last year we entered two sides into the annual Six-A-Side tournament, the Pink Ladies and
the Blue Birds. The Pink Ladies, led by Sharon Reeder, won and were awarded with a trophy.
We are always looking for new ladies to help and the club is always open for those who wish to socialise as
well as the men!
Alison Rees-Jones (the first and hopefully not the last female on the ACC
committee).

The club

issues of keeping the Club membership up to date with Club news we are trying to use e-mail as much as possible. If you have an
e-mail address which we can use to send you Club information please let us know by e-mailing nof101@hotmail.com or through the
Club website: www.attenborough-cc-.net.
Congratulations
Congratulations from everyone at Attenborough CC to club member Steve Allcoat, who was recently appointed England Universities Cricket Captain. Well done Steve!
