The Chairman’s Address

May I first wish all our members a Happy New Year. As most of you will know there were a few changes to the club committee announced at the recent Annual General Meeting.

Geoff Gooch remains the Club President, however Matt Brick has stepped down as Chairman. I wish Matt well and would like to thank him for the work he has done during his year as Chairman. As you may have guessed, I was asked to return to the Chairmanship and was glad to do so. Stuart Carlisle stays as Vice-Chairman and Martin Firbank continues in his role as Secretary. Mike Dickinson has stepped down as Club Treasurer. Again I would like to thank Mike for all his hard work over the years, especially during the 2000 flood, which, without Mike’s experience in the insurance business, could have cost the club a great deal more than it did. The new Treasurer has created a bit of club history. As far as I know, Allison Rees-Jones is the first female to sit on the Attenborough CC committee. I hope Allison will enjoy her role and I’m sure the club finances are in good hands.

In addition, Dave Williams continues in his role as our Legal eagle, as well as fulfilling the role of Fixture Secretary. Mike Aplin takes on the role of overseeing Club Development, as well as Ground along with Gay Clarke. Mike will also take on some of the duties of departing committee member Garry Bacon. Again, I would like to thank Garry for all his work whilst on the committee. Garry’s other roles will be taken by Neil Francis, along with Press and Marketing. Phil Wort stays on the committee in charge of Social and Fundraising, as well as coordinating the 150 Club and Vice President subscriptions. Kevin Collins also remains with the committee as a representative of Attenborough Football Club, assisting with Development and Social, and also providing a valuable link between the club and the residents of The Strand.

Finally, I come to our Senior and Youth Cricket sections. Nick Allcoat has stepped down as Youth Manager and taken over from Mick Aplin as Senior Cricket Manager. We have co-opted 1st XI captain Andy Simkiss onto the committee as a representative of the players. We hope that Nick and Andy can, between them, take cricket at Attenborough forward with the committee. Behind them, the Youth Section managers are Martin Prentice and Richard Henson. Martin will be taking care of the administrative side of things, Richard the practice side.

I hope this goes some way to explaining who is looking after the welfare of Attenborough CC for you. I know that if you have any questions any of the listed committee members will gladly be willing to listen.

Paul Chambers, Attenborough CC Chairman

Senior Cricket

Following the AGM last November, a number of changes have taken place within the club particularly amongst the captains and the vice-captains of the various teams. For those of you who were unable to attend the AGM (many thanks to those that did - a good turn out from the playing members), Andy Simkiss will continue to skipper the Saturday 1st XI, Carl Whelan takes over skippering the Saturday 2nd XI, and Colin McConnell will captain the Saturday 3rd XI. The Sunday 1st team will be lead by Joe Gates, with the Sunday 2nd team continuing to be skippered by Stuart Carlisle. Thanks go to the out going captains, Brian Aplin, Es Urwin and Martin Shoemaker, for the support and contributions over the previous seasons.

We are pleased to be able to confirm that we have secured an overseas player for the 2008 season. Craig Woods, South African, 20 years of age, comes with good references. A top order batsman/off spin bowler, Craig is currently captain of the Natal University 1st XI, and plays for the ‘Dolphins’ B and Academy teams. Not only will Craig be a good asset to the playing staff, but he will also be involved in helping to coach the Juniors as well as assisting Gay, Mick, Keith and John on the ground.

Indoor nets start at Trent Bridge on Wednesday 6th February, 8.00pm - 9.00pm and run until April as usual - existing and new members welcome.

We continue to improve our cricket facilities within the club. Having developed the Long Lane ground last year, we intend to ensure that The Strand continues to receive investment also. A new artificial wicket was installed in November, and work is scheduled to take place in the Spring to lengthen the bowlers run-up in the nets.

Finally, the Committee, with the support of the members, have now established a new position within the club - that of ‘Cricket Manager’. Working with the club captains, the Cricket Manager’s duties will cover chairing the selection meetings, training, and any other cricket related business! I have agreed to take up this role, but for it to be a success I will need the playing members support. We’ll have a players meeting prior to the new season starting, to discuss any ideas you may have, but if you have any thoughts before then, on how we could improve things concerning the ‘cricket’, please contact me.

Nick Allcoat, Cricket Manager

Indoor Nets

Senior indoor nets are to be held in the Sobers’ Hall at Trent Bridge from Wednesday 6th February to Wednesday 23rd April 2008. The net sessions run from 8pm until 9pm and the cost is £2 per session to be paid on the night. Please note the change in day from last year.

Firework Night

Firstly I would like to thank all those who were involved in the planning and execution of what has been described as the best Firework Night event held at Attenborough CC so far. Support is always needed and gratefully received. Next year we are looking to build upon this success and aim to raise even more funds for the club. We will need more volunteers and I would urge anyone who hasn’t already been involved to put their name forward. There are various activities that we require help with and everyone who has helped in the past has said what a great time was had.

Chilli Night

A Nottinghamshire CCC Academy Fund Raising Evening is being held at the club on Friday January 25th by youth section member Dom Harvey for his 2008 nominated Academy charity. The evening is a Chilli Night and a two course meal will be available (chilli and rice with tortilla chips followed by cheese cake and ice cream, vegetarian option available) at a cost of £8 per ticket. The event starts at 7.30pm and tickets are on sale behind the bar now.
