Attenborough CC Development
After standing down
as Attenborough CC Chairman at the end of last season I was happy to take over the role overseeing Club Development, so this is my
first report.
During the winter we
have progressed with the new ground on Long Lane. In September 2006 a new square was laid. The refurbishment of the changing
facilities was given priority over the Cricket Force weekend. Many thanks to all those who helped with this years Cricket Force.
Without their help we would have struggled to get everything finished in time. There are still one or two jobs to be done, the
main ones being the replacement of the all-weather pitch hopefully by the end of July and the concreting of an area outside the
changing rooms.
As for The Strand, we
purchased new covers for the start of the current season and the fence aligning the hedge has been repaired.
Until the situation
with the flood defences has been resolved it is difficult to plan any long term development for the club. We are therefore looking
at replacing some of our older equipment such as the gang mowers and tractor. As always these cost money, so please help by
supporting the club at our social events during the season. All money raised will help the club to move
forward.

News From Trent Bridge
The County 1st
XI has made a marvellous start to the 2007 season. At the time of going to press they are undefeated after the six games in the LV
County Championship, 25 points clear of second placed Middlesex.
In the Friends Provident (North) Trophy they are second to Durham, who have had no games ’rained off’ and are one point ahead after seven games.
David Hussey
tops the 1st Class Batting averages (81.88) and Jason Gallian is 11th (54.40), whilst three of our bowlers are in the top group of
the Bowling Averages, Ryan Sidebottom (23 wkts at 20.45), Mark Ealham (21 wkts at 26.42) and Charlie Shreck (27 wkts at 28.29). In

Finally, on a
sad note the Nottinghamshire 1st XI Scorer Gordon Stringfellow passed away suddenly on Monday June 4th. Gordon played for Gedling
Colliery CC in his youth, and would be well know to some older members. Our condolences go from the club and his many friends.
Youth Cricket
The season is now in full swing with our young cricketers enjoying the coaching and games played to date. The Under 15s have enjoyed a good win over Basford (Dominic Harvey 51*, Callum Brick 31*), the Under 13s heavily defeated Thrumpton, whilst the Under 11s have scored a superb victory over Ellerslie by 3 runs!
We now have
over 100 junior members on the books (from 27 local schools), and this number is still growing! The juniors are looking forward to
the ’Youth Members Day’ on Sunday July 1st where we shall be playing games, competitions, have a BBQ and this year
hold an auction of quality new cricket kit. We look forward to seeing you all on the day!
Thank you for
everyone’s help and support in making the cricket on offer enjoyable for our future stars!!

Tales From The Bar
When asked by
Thin (our very own roving reporter) to provide a piece for the newsletter I thought that there was not really anything of note to
write about the bar. Then I thought, yes we have had some quite major incidents and stories from around the bar from the past
number of years and it may be worth recalling some of them.
Of course we
used to have the umpires convention every Saturday night when all of the club umpires would talk about their games and decisions
of the day. This was perfect to help me sleep most Saturday nights, listening to their tales and them asking ‘what would you have
done?’. It would be something absurd like ‘a mass murderer running across the square when the bowler had bowled a no-ball with 3
behind square including the mass murderer who was then in front of square by the time of delivery’!!
Nowadays we
have moved on to even more trivial arguments. Only the other night we had our esteemed captain of the successful Saturday 2nd XI
talking about the cost of ‘match day’ subs, and the hardship it was causing. He was saying that some of the lads had to actually
stay in 1 night a week on occasions to save up for their subs. This got me thinking, and perhaps a solution would be to provide a
sort of ‘meal deal’ or ‘drink deal’ for playing members, whereby a minimum of 10 pints of beer had to be included in their match
day subs and hopefully keep everybody happy, and carry on the traditional drinking culture in the club!!
Well that’s
about it for this issue and, as I was talking to my girlfriend in my new car browsing through the “property guide” for suitable
houses on Beeston Fields Drive, it got me thinking as well: ‘what is the subs money needed for anyway?’.

Cricket Book Sale
One of my friends and a valued Vice President of the club, Les Bullimore, has kindly donated most of his vast collection of
old cricket books and magazines. He has left it to me to dispose with a view to raising some money for the
club.
He has always, since I managed ‘Colts Cricket’, been a great supporter of our Youth Policy, so I have liaised with Nick
Allcoat to incorporate a Book Sale into his plans for the Colts Day on Sunday July 1st.
Many of the books are ‘very old’ and would perhaps not be of great interest to our youngsters, but there are also a number
of more modern books which I can supplement with some from my private collection, so IT IS A GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR YOUNG AND OLD
ALIKE TO COME ALONG AND PICK UP SOME REAL BARGAINS!
If we arrange a Vice Presidents Day later in the season it is proposed to repeat the exercise, where some of the books
going back to the stars of the 1930s onwards will be on sale, which should be of real interest to them. We may even just have a
Bumper Book Sale Day, SO WATCH THIS SPACE IN THE NEXT NEWSLETTER!
Finally, if there are any ‘collectors’ within the club who have a ‘real interest’ and who would like to have a preview with
an offer in mind for, say, a set of old ‘Cricketer’ magazines would they please contact me ASAP and I will make the necessary
arrangements. Thank you!
