Summer 2008
The Chairman Writes.....
Firstly, may I apologise for the delay in publication of this newsletter. As
with most jobs in the Club it’s a task that falls to the few.
Now to business. As you all know, the Club only asks vice-presidents to pay a
minimum of £10 to be a member at Attenborough and, at present, some membership payments are still outstanding. If you did wish to
continue your membership at ACC in a vice-presidential capacity could you please submit payment to our Treasurer, Alison
Rees-Jones, as soon as possible.
On the social side of things, we have had several events already this year all
of which have been very successful. These include a Chilli Night, Sausage and Mash Night, and Steak Night. If you would like to
know or to receive information about future events run at Attenborough you can either see the notices in our Clubhouse at The
Strand or visit our website at www.attenborough-cc.net. You can also e-mail any queries, comments or suggestions you may have
about the Club through the website. We are always happy to receive any input or feedback that you would like to
give.
Lastly, we increasingly would like to be able to communicate directly with our
members quickly and at limited cost, for example as regards notification of social events etc. To that end we aim to keep our
database of Club Members e-mail addresses as up to date as possible. If you would like to receive future correspondence, and in
particular future newsletters, by e-mail you can do so by sending your contact details to Neil Francis at nof101@hotmail.com
Many
thanks, and we hope to see many of you during upcoming Club social events.

Senior Cricket
Following an excellent, well supported winter training programme, the season is
now in full swing. Players of all teams are benefiting from the hard work put in prior to the season
starting.
The 1st XI has had a good start to the
season and are presently at the top of Division 1A. Their goal of a top 3 finish in this division is certainly on course.
Following 2 early wins against Newstead Village and Balderton we suffered set backs against Long Eaton and Notts Unity. After
these defeats, the 1st XI squad responded positively with further wins against table toppers Gedling
& Sherwood and Radliffe on Trent, a last over victory against Keyworth, and winning draws with Calverton, Newstead, Long Eaton
and Balderton, and a win over Notts Unity that featured a superb century from Alec McKinlay. Good bowling, applying consistent
pressure, and improved batting performances were the key to our successes in the early part of the season. The number of different
players turning in match winning performances was particularly pleasing and augurs well for forthcoming matches. The collective
abilities of our first teamers (the young and not so young) is a pleasure to witness. In the Popkess Cup, as holders, it was
brilliant to set off on another cup run in beating Loughborough Carillion in an exciting finish and Collingham by virtue of a
bowl-off in Round 2. We now face Gotham Village in the quarter-finals.
Our overseas player, Craig Woods arrived in April and was soon amongst the runs
and wickets. His expertise has proved invaluable also at Senior and Junior training nights. I know also that John Birkin has been
grateful of Craig’s company in helping with ground maintenance duties. Craig was particularly appreciative of how the club helped
him celebrate his 21st birthday, and thanks everyone for their best wishes, the party, and special
present.
The 2nd XI has also had a good start to the
season in 1D, being at the top of the league for the majority of the season. Batting honours are with Jimmy Piper at the moment
who has put in some quality performances. Arjun Singh, 15 years of age, has been the ‘find’ of the season so far. He has already
achieved 3 match winning performances in taking 3 five wicket hauls in a 4 week spell! Surely this must be some sort of record.
The 2nd XI have now recorded 7 victories from their 10 matches to
date.
Highlights for the 3rd XI in 1K are Rich Henson’s 132; Colin McConnell’s batting consistency and the general improvement already seen in several of the youngsters who populate this team. Their most recent success included 73* from 13-year old Callum Taylor. The thirds are currently figuring in the top 5 of the division.
The Sunday 1st XI has also started well, winning
most of their matches. Highlights here include a match winning 106 from Alec McKinlay against Southwell. It has been pleasing to
see that we are once again fielding ‘quality sides’ in this competitive division of the Newark Alliance, thanks to several
Saturday 1st teamers making themselves available for selection.
The Sunday 2nd XI continues to beat almost
everything put before them! This is an excellent achievement given that this, together with our 3rd XI, is the platform for several of our Junior members to be introduced to Senior cricket.
Club member Steve Allcoat has been selected to play again for the England Universities Cricket
team and was honoured to receive the captaincy. From our Junior section, Dominic Harvey is involved in the Midlands trials and
Notts U17 & U15 Representative squads and Callum Taylor is in the Notts U13 Representative squad.
We continue to develop our facilities. A new ‘mobile practice net cage’ has been purchased to
enable practice to take place on the square. Portable sight screens are to be bought for use on the ground at Long Lane. New
benches and bases have been installed for spectators. The area around the nets has been cleared ready for seeding. Overall the
cricket club has enjoyed a great start to the season on and off the field. Let’s hope that we enjoy a long hot summer and that all
of the teams achieve the success of which they are capable.

Youth
Cricket
Yet another season of Youth Cricket at Attenborough is coming to an end, and what a season it is
turning out to be. Membership hit an all time high with 160 children registering this year.
Monday nights
have been fantastic, with upwards of 90 children playing Kwik Cricket and other games organised by the Youth Section coaches and
their many helpers.
On Wednesdays,
it was the turn of the more senior boys, the U13s and U15s, and once again these sessions were very well organised. A lot of
credit must go to Alan Harrison, our professional coach, and Craig Woods, our overseas player. They, along with the other coaches
and many parents who offered their help, have done a sterling job.
Our annual
Youth Section Day was held on Sunday 29th June and proved to be a great success, even though the rain did threaten to make it a
wash out. The children had a wonderful day, many games were played, and it was all worth it just to see Andy Lee getting soaked by
all his Kwik Cricketers! The last parents/kids match was still being played at gone 8pm. A great day was had by
all.
On the field,
at the time of writing, the U12s are closing in on what could be Attenborough’s first junior trophy for many a year. They have won
8 and lost only 1 of their 9 league matches so far, and have 4 to play, so keep it going lads! Richard Henson and John Van Helden
have got them really fired up!
At Kwik
Cricket, we entered 2 teams both run admirably by Andy Lee and Ian Baddeley. The A team lost only 1 match, and that was to
Thrumpton who won all of their remaining matches, so they came 2nd overall. Andy’s boys were unlucky not to win it! Better luck
next year.
At U13s, Dave
Taylor and Mark Tewson are doing a fine job, to date they have won 5 of their 10 matches. Keep up the good
work!
Martin
Prentice’s U15s started the season well, winning their first 2 matches before losing the next 3. However, they have currently won
3, lost 5, with 1 no result.
All in all, the
youth teams have had a very good season so far. It will not be long before trophies start to be won, I am confident of
that!
There is a
Youth Section 6-A-Side at The Strand on Sunday 24th August and the presentation for all the youth teams, also at The Strand, is on
Monday 1st September. Both events will include games and a barbeque.
Finally,
Richard and Martin would like to take this opportunity to thank every parent and coach who has helped us out during this summer.
Without you all we would not have been able to do it. Well done! I do not know how Nick Allcoat used to
manage!

Six-A-Side
Our annual Six-A-Side Tournament was held on a very damp afternoon on May 25th. The eventually winners were the team of Neil Francis (captain), Colin McConnell, Dominic Harvey, Callum Taylor, Nick Anderson and Phil Wort, who beat 1st XI skipper Andy Simkiss’s side in the final. Congratulations to them.
