Spring 2006 Newsletter

The Chairman Writes….

Firstly may I thank everyone who gave help last year with our Centenary, especially the sub-committee of Paul, Tim and Margot.  Everyone to whom I have spoken enjoyed the events; some of these we hope to continue.

Every year we hope as a committee to have an easier time, but as in the past few years something seems to happen. We’ve had the Great Flood, electric cables across the outfield, the need to lay a new square, and standing water which required new drainage.  This year we have the flood barrier proposals which at the moment are still not finalised and the route not yet known.

On the cricket side, Ben Sheppard will again be leading the 1st XI in Division A where we finished second last year, and Bryan Aplin will skipper the Division D Championship winning 2nd XI in Division C.  We have a new Captain of the 3rd XI in Es Urwin and I wish him an enjoyable and successful season.  On Sundays the 1st XI will be under the Captaincy of Sam Clulow with the mature 2nd XI led by Stuart Carlisle again.

I am pleased to write that Nick Allcoat will be looking after the Youth Section.  Again, I am sure if there are any Mums or Dads who could help in this area, Nick would like to hear from you.

Finally we are looking at one or two projects including plans for the pavilion, a partnership with a local school to bring the 3rd XI closer to home, additional drainage and other work around the ground.  I will keep you updated with progress on these issues in future newsletters.

I look forward to a hot summer, entertaining and successful cricket and a few beers in the pavilion with you all.

Club Chairman

Email contact request

Sometimes we would like to be able to communicate directly with our members quickly, and at limited cost. For example, notes of social events etc.

To that end we are aiming to compile a database of all Club Members’ email addresses including Youth Section members, Players and Vice Presidents.  Please email your contact details to:

garry@chilwell.wanadoo.co.uk

150 Club

The 150 Club has again proved to be very successful in 2005.  The Club would like to thank all those who have taken part and have made it such a success.

If any one would like a list of winners in 2005 please email Phil Wort at garry@chilwell.wanadoo.co.uk

We would ask all existing 150 Club members to forward their cheques in payment as soon as possible to Phil Wort at 77 Whitburn Road, Beeston, Nottingham, NG9 6HR.

Anyone interested in joining the 150 Club should also make contact with Phil as above.

The 150 Club helps raise money for Club funds in the following way.  Every member of the 150 Club pays £20 at the start of the year.  Each month three prize winners are drawn winning £40, £20 and £10.  Once a year the grand draw takes place where three lucky winners are picked with the prizes being £400, £150 and £75

Youth Section

Cricket continues to flourish in Attenborough during the winter months. The juniors, no doubt buoyed by the excitement of the Ashes series last year, have been very keen to practice their skills. Indoor nets have been very well supported, with between 20 and 30 youngsters regularly attending Bramcote Hills Sport & Community College on Friday evenings, 6.30p.m to 8.00p.m. We shall be training at this venue until Easter, after which we shall then be back at The Strand to enjoy our Monday evening outdoor practice sessions.

Plans are now being made for the start of the 2006 season, when we shall be fielding teams at Kwik cricket, under 12, under 13, and under 15 age groups. Congratulations to Dominic Harvey who has been selected for the Midlands U13 squad.

Any new junior members are always welcome, and should contact me on 0115 9225403 for further details.

Nick Allcoat
Director of Youth Cricket

Centenary Year

The Centenary Year concluded in grand style with the firework display on Saturday 5th November and the New Year’ Eve party at the Village Hall.  Both events were considerable successes, particularly the firework display, which attracted over 1,000 people.

Paul Shoemaker, Tim Clarke and Margot Holton put in a lot of hard work to lead the Centenary Committee which is very much appreciated.  We would also like to thank our sponsors during the year, which included Homebase, Experian, Westerman Builders, Veritas, Brook Street and R Shepherd Motors.

We still have Centenary Club silk ties and commemorative brochures on sale, priced at £12.50 and £2 respectively.  These can be obtained from the Pavilion bar or by contacting a Committee member.

Extras

Members wanting to use the Pavilion or ground are requested to fill in an information form to detail their requirements, and help the Committee to make adequate preparations.  The forms are available from Mike Aplin or Martin Firbank.

The Club now has an accident book (kept with the first aid kit in the kitchen).  All accidents should be recorded in this book so the Club can stay in line with health and safety requirements.

The NCCC Club Cricketers Membership Scheme 2006 application form has been received.  This allows playing members of NCB clubs to become members at Trent Bridge for the discounted price of £52.  Membership entitles the holder to free admission during the County Championship, National Cricket League, C&G Trophy and some Twenty-twenty cup competitions.  Forms are available from Martin Firbank

Visit the Club’s website www.attenborough-cc.net to keep track of Club news.  It contains the 2005 averages, 2005 results, Club history, back issues of the newsletter, and links to other cricketing sites.

The Committee are looking for people who may be willing to help in the provision of teas during the season.  This is a very important part of match days at Attenborough, and the Club and our opponents appreciate the work.  As well as those who have volunteered in the past, we are also keen to attract new volunteers.  Please contact a Committee Member for more details.

We have been invited to host the Raleigh Cup Final on Sunday 3rd September 2006.  It is an honour to be selected to host this event, and will be a good opportunity to showcase our ground, facilities and hospitality to other clubs.

Garry Bacon has taken over maintenance of the Club database.  Please keep him informed of any changes in contacted details.  In light of the cost and logistical issues of keeping the Club membership informed of Club news we are trying to use e-mail as much as possible.  If you have an e-mail address which can be used to send Club information please let us know by e-mailing garry@chilwell.wanadoo.co.uk

Tour

We are looking at a Tour this year during the last weekend in July.

Venue is flexible at this stage with suggestions ranging from Norfolk, Oxford to Scarborough.

Key thing at this stage is commitment to go. If you want a Tour this year I need to know by end March as to likely numbers with non-refundable deposits by end April at latest.

Contact Phil Wort to confirm intention to Tour.

Cricket Force

On the weekend of 8 and 9 April 2006 we will be taking part in the NatWest Cricket Force initiative for the first time.  The scheme ran in 2005 with 665 clubs and over 50,000 volunteers participating, and, according to its website, has a “Changing Rooms meets Groundforce” objective of doing something positive for clubs around the country.

The event is planned to coincide with the start of the season, so we can hit the ground running when it is time for the first ball to be bowled.

Cricket Force encourages the local community to get involved, both in terms of volunteers giving their time and local businesses aiding with support, equipment and materials.

At the moment a small committee under the leadership of Garry Bacon are planning our projects for the Cricket Force weekend and making contact with local people and firms, but if you are interested in helping out volunteers and offers of assistance will be most welcome.

This will be a good way of getting Club members together before the start of the season and for anybody interested in joining the Club to meet with existing members and find out more about us and what we offer.  For more information please contact a Committee member or visit the Cricket Force website for news (www.ecb.co.uk/cricketforce).
